KäferCar Racing
is an effort put forth by myself, Gary Scurlock to expand and grow my Volkswagen Hobby. I worked with VWs in
high school and like all teenagers I poured myself into learning all about these cars. I enjoy all aspects of
dealing with automobiles. I enjoy working on the engines, body work, painting and even the interior work. No other
car has fascinated me more than Volkswagens.
While a Volkswagen Beetle isn't the most attractive car. It has features that appeal to me. It is a simple car, most pieces
and parts are easily handled with minimal effort. (try putting a V-8 on a cafeteria table) Parts are readily available even
at the local parts store. The car doesn't have computers or fuel injection to hurt your brain.
the best thing about Volkswagen is the other cool stuff you can build. Naturally dune buggies and trikes come to mind. Also Baja
bugs for racing. In 1959 some gentlemen got together and came up with another car built from VW parts. The Formula Vee race car.
Formula because cars have to fit a "formula" of length, width, hieght, and weight. Also called out in the formula is engine size
and arrangement. The Volkswagen Formula Vee is very similar to Formula One except that the average person can actually buy and own
a Formula Vee for the price of a tire or two from a Formula One car.
In 2006 I discovered I could purchase a Volkswagen Formula Vee race car for less than $1000. Not a running driving car but a former
Vintage race car made in 1968. I have participated in the Volkswagen community for the last five years. I attended every show I could
and entered my own cars into shows. Better than shows are cruises, when we drive our cars through the country side and enjoy just
being a Volkswagen owner. I felt something was missing and I think I found it in a nearly 40 year old race car. So I bought the car
and prepared myself to go racing and explore another facet of Volkswagen ownership.
I plan to race my cars at the No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, Louisiana. Stay tuned here for race information and results.

The photo is the Volkswagen Formula Vee car on the day I purchased it 13 May 2006.
My young friend at the wheel is doing the driving to load it on the trailer for us. The car had four old racing slicks and only two actually held air.
Close inspection showed the car had very tight steering and only a few minor
problems. To insure the car is safe and mechanically sound it will have to
be fully restored.
The car will have to be completely disassembled inspected, repaired and
painted. You can follow this project and others in the photo gallery.
